In addition, Elvis Presley’s If I Can Dream sits securely in seventh position, meaning four of the albums in the top 10 belong to posthumous musicians.
Bowie’s Blackstar album takes second place on the album chart with 345,000 combined sales, according to the Official Charts Company’s quarterly figures.
The Ziggy Stardust singer released the album just weeks before he died of cancer in January.
Two of his other albums – 2002′s Best Of Bowie and 2014′s Nothing Has Changed (The Very Best of Bowie) – are at positions number four and 10 respectively.
He has claimed the most positions on the quarterly chart with a total of six placings in the Top 40.
Adele is at number one with her hit album, 25, which has notched up combined sales of 406,000 this year.
