'Embarrassing husband' almost ruins LeBron's $208m bombshell

NBA superstar LeBron James sent the internet into a frenzy after news of his four-year $US154 million ($A208m) LA Lakers deal was revealed, but was the bombshell almost spoiled by an “embarrassing” super fan?

Eagle-eyed Twitter users might not be as surprised as the rest of us at today’s news of James joining the Lakers in what is easily the biggest deal of the NBA off-season.

James’s management team made the announcement on Monday, confirming he’ll leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time to join one of the NBA’s most iconic franchises.

However, Twitter user @IkaikaHall claims to have had the scoop over the rest of us at least a day earlier, as he discreetly filmed what he claims was a car containing James, with two other vehicles following behind.

Captioning the post, ‘LeBron Watch is getting a little out of hand…’ the man reveals he was following James and his wife as they drove through the streets of Los Angeles.

During the minute and a half rant on video, the man makes a number of assumptions he says point to James’s imminent move to Los Angeles.

The poster says the ‘fact’ there were no kids with James and his wife but another car filled with bags and other items – suggests he was in Los Angeles “for business.”

“We’ve pulled up beside him on a couple of occasions but my wife won’t let me roll down the window and say anything to him because she says that she’s embarrassed and she says I’m stalking,” the man states on the video.

It may have seemed incredibly far-fetched at the time and with no evidence to back up his assertions that James was actually in the car – many people could have been forgiven for being incredibly sceptical.

Remarkably though, James’s announcement the very next day suggests that maybe, just perhaps, the super fan was in fact telling the truth.

Either way, the man’s video has been watched more than 68-thousand times and his “assumptions” turned out to be spot on.

James’s announcement changes the scope of both the eastern and western conferences as the Lakers look to re-emerge as championship contenders.

It marks the first time James will play for a team in the hotly-contested western conference, which includes heavyweight teams such as the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets.

The Lakers’ big off-season might not be finished with All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard reportedly requesting a trade to LA from the San Antonio Spurs.

For the second time in his career, James is saying goodbye to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who drafted the teenage sensation from Akron in 2003 and have to be satisfied with winning one title, in 2016, in the 11 years they had him.

The 33-year-old, who has averaged 27.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game in 1,143 career contests, also won two NBA titles in four seasons with the Miami Heat.

Los Angeles will also provide James with a larger platform for his business interests and social activism. He already owns two homes in Southern California and has a film production company.

Unlike his two previous forays in free agency, James did not drag out his decision and made the announcement less than 24 hours after NBA free agency opened.

Shortly after word leaked about James’s decision, the Lakers made another move by re-signing guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a one-year, $12 million deal, according to ESPN.

Caldwell-Pope averaged 13.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game in his first season in LA.
